Culion
Island Philippine island formerly a leper colony, now municipality
Culion Island in northern Palawan was a 20th-century leprosy settlement and now preserves colonial-era hospital buildings, a museum and quiet beaches; travelers visit for diving, history and slow island life.
Culion is an island municipality in the Palawan island group of the Philippines, administratively part of Mimaropa. The island is best known for its history as a quarantine and leprosarium site from the late 19th century into the 20th century.
Today the town and surrounding islands are populated communities with fishing and small-scale tourism; visitors often come to see the historical hospital complex and the local museum. The island retains physical remains and archives relating to its medical and social history.
Culion’s institutional history includes Spanish and American colonial-era establishments that concentrated people with leprosy on the island under isolation policies. Over the 20th century the medical mission and public-health functions changed and the community gradually reintegrated.
Geographically Culion sits in the Calamian Archipelago in northern Palawan, consisting of Culion Island and adjacent islets; it lies off the north coast of Palawan province and is accessible by boat from regional ports.
- Historical role: The municipality includes Culion Island and a number of smaller surrounding islets; the island served as a government-run leprosarium and quarantine center during the colonial and American periods.
What to See #
- Culion Museum and Archives: A small museum and archives on the island documenting the history of the leprosarium, local culture, and archival photos and records.
