Culion Island
Island Palawan island formerly a leper colony, diving sites
Part of northern Palawan, Culion Island pairs white‑sand coves with a history as a former leprosarium; visitors dive nearby wrecks, visit a small medical museum and stay in low‑key beachfront inns.
Culion Island is the principal island of the Culion municipality in the northern part of Palawan province, Philippines, and was historically the site of a colonial-era leprosy settlement. It later developed into a populated municipality with towns, medical facilities and local infrastructure.
Visitors can see remnants of early 20th century hospital and quarantine-era buildings, a local museum covering the island’s history, and coastal villages and beaches. Boat connections to Coron and other Calamian Islands make the island accessible to visitors and researchers.
The island played a significant role in Philippine public-health history during the American colonial period when authorities established a dedicated leprosarium there; the community has since transitioned to a normal municipal administration while preserving its historical sites.
Culion lies in the Calamian Islands group in northern Palawan, Philippines, northwest of the main Palawan island and near Busuanga/Coron; access is typically by scheduled ferry or private boat.
- Getting there: Ferries and boats connect the island with Coron (Busuanga) and other islands in the Calamian group; schedules vary by season.
- Heritage museum: A small museum on the island documents its history as a leprosy colony and local heritage.
How to Get to Culion Island #
Culion Island is reached by boat from the main ports in northern Palawan. Regular ferries and fastcraft sail between Culion and Coron (Busuanga) town - you can reach Coron via scheduled flights to Busuanga (Francisco B. Reyes) Airport, then transfer by taxi to Coron port and take the ferry to Culion. Boats also run from Puerto Princesa at times; check current schedules locally. On arrival at Culion pier it’s a short walk into the town center.
Tips for Visiting Culion Island #
- Catch an early ferry from Coron (Busuanga) or Roxas rather than relying on ad-hoc day tours - ferries arrive at Culion town pier and getting there early gives you more time to walk the town and visit the museum before afternoon boat traffic.
- Make the Culion Museum and Archives your first stop; staff hours are limited and the exhibits explain the island's history as a former leprosarium, which provides context for the ruins and colonial-era buildings that many visitors otherwise only pass by.
- Plan and book any accommodation or any inter-island transfers in advance - tourist services on Culion are limited compared with Coron, so reservations and a clear return-ferry plan avoid being stranded or squeezed onto late boats.
