Crissa Archaeological Site

Crissa (Krissa) was an ancient Greek city-state in central Greece, located on the coastal plain below the sanctuary at Delphi and associated historically with the port of Cirrha. It was an early regional centre in Phocis and played a role in the control of access to the inland religious sanctuary.

Archaeological traces include an acropolis and evidence of settlement and defensive works that reflect its role in the archaic period. The coastal outlet at Cirrha provided maritime access for pilgrims and trade to the inland sanctuary.

In the archaic and classical periods the city was involved in regional conflicts and political arrangements tied to the Amphictyonic League that centred on Delphi. Over time Crissa declined as Delphi and other centres altered the pattern of regional control and trade.

The site lies in Phocis in central Greece, on the coastal and lowland approaches to Delphi and the Gulf of Corinth, near the modern area around Kirra and the archaeological remains associated with ancient Delphi.

What to See#

• Acropolis and ruins: The acropolis and surrounding archaeological remains are associated with the ancient city’s civic and religious functions and lie on elevated ground near the later sanctuary of Delphi.
• Cirrha (harbour): The ancient port site of Cirrha lay on the coastline below the city and served as the seaward outlet for the inland sanctuary complex.

Drive: Ancient Crissa (Krissa) lies on the Gulf of Corinth near the modern villages of Chrisso and Itea, close to Delphi. From Athens the drive to the Delphi area is about 170-200 km via the A1 and then EO48 (roughly 2.5-3 hours depending on traffic); signage will direct you toward Itea/Delphi.

Public transport: Intercity KTEL buses run from Athens to Delphi/Itea; from the Delphi/Itea bus stop the archaeological sites and the area of ancient Crissa are a short walk or a very brief local taxi ride from the town centres.
