How to Get to Eretria#
Eretria (on Evia island) is reached from Athens airport or Athens city by road; there are no regular rail services into the town. Buses (KTEL and local routes) and private car are the practical options - driving is often the fastest and most flexible.
Athens Eleftherios Venizelos Airport (ATH): The main international airport for central Greece. From ATH you can reach Eretria by road - either car rental or bus connections via Athens city/port areas; travel time Athens→Eretria is about 1.5-2 hours by car depending on traffic. Airport transfers to central Athens take ~35-45 minutes (X95/X96 buses or Metro + bus) with fares from €1.20-€10 depending on mode.
Chalkida (via Athens regional services): There is no major commercial airport on Evia island; the practical air gateway is Athens. From Athens you head to Chalkida/Chalcis and then onward to Eretria by road (≈30-45 minutes from Chalkida).
Train: There is no direct national rail service to Eretria - rail reaches Chalcis only indirectly and service patterns change, so trains are not the reliable option for final access to Eretria.
Bus: KTEL buses (regional coach operators) are the standard public option: you can catch a KTEL bus toward Chalkida/Chalcis from Athens (Kifissos or Liossion bus stations) and change for a local bus or taxi to Eretria; total travel from Athens central to Eretria is typically 1.5-2.5 hours and fares are approximately €6-15 depending on connections and season.
How to Get Around Eretria#
KTEL buses and private cars are the realistic ways to reach Eretria from Athens; trains do not provide reliable access. Once there, local buses, taxis and walking cover most needs.
- KTEL bus (regional) (€6-15) - Regional KTEL coaches connect Athens with Chalkida and other towns on Evia; from Chalkida you transfer to a local bus or taxi to reach Eretria. Buses are economical - check KTEL Evias timetables and arrive early in tourist season.
- Car / Rental (€25-70/day (rental)) - Driving from Athens via the bridge at Chalkida is the simplest option and takes about 1.5-2 hours depending on traffic. A car gives the freedom to explore nearby beaches and archaeological sites; parking in Eretria is generally straightforward outside the high season.
- Taxi / Private transfer (€60-120 (Athens→Eretria, typical private transfer)) - Private transfers from Athens or the airport are door-to-door and useful if you have luggage or arrive late; costs are significantly higher than buses but can be comparable to a mid-range rental for one-way trips.
- Local bus / Shared taxi (€1.50-6) - Local buses and shared taxis operate between nearby towns and villages on Evia; timetables can be sparse outside summer. These are the cheapest way to make short hops, but expect limited frequency.
- Bicycle (€0-20/day (rental)) - Eretria town and its seafront are pleasant to explore by bicycle in fair weather. For trips between villages the terrain can be hilly, so an e-bike or moderate fitness helps.
- Walking - Eretria’s waterfront, archaeological site, and town centre are compact and best explored on foot. Walking between main sites takes little time and is the recommended way to soak in the town.
