Castalian Spring Archaeological Site

Address: Castalian Spring (Kastalia), near Delphi, Central Greece

Castalian Spring is the sacred spring at Delphi on Mount Parnassus that supplied water for ritual cleansing in the ancient sanctuary of Apollo. It occupies a narrow ravine close to the main sanctuary area and includes stone-built channels and niches from the Roman period.

The site is noted for its surviving waterworks and the sheltered pool where priests and pilgrims washed before entering the oracle area; steps and retaining walls direct the flow and create small gathering spaces. It is a minor but important element of the wider Delphi complex and is usually visited on the same circuit as the Temple of Apollo and the theatre.

The spring and associated structures date to antiquity and were maintained and modified under Roman administration. The spring’s role as a ritual source continued through successive phases of the sanctuary’s use.

Geographically the spring lies on the eastern edge of the archaeological site of Delphi, on the slopes of Mount Parnassus near the modern village of Delphi.

• Ritual purification site: Stone-lined spring and Roman-era fountain niches lie below the main sanctuary of Delphi and were used for ritual purification by pilgrims and the Pythia.
• Proximity to Delphi: Located on the slopes of Mount Parnassus, roughly 180 km northwest of Athens by road and a short walk from the Temple of Apollo and Delphi archaeological site.

The spring is located within the archaeological area of Delphi, near the main archaeological museum and Temple of Apollo. Delphi is about 2.5-3 hours by car from Athens; public buses run from Athens to Delphi daily.

• Go early to see the spring before larger tour groups arrive; the site is shallow with limited shade.
• Combine the visit with Delphi or nearby archaeological sites if exploring central Greece.
• Wear comfortable shoes - access paths are uneven and can be steep.
