Costa Rica in October: Weather, Crowds & What to Expect

Guanacaste & Northwest Pacific (Liberia, Tamarindo, Nosara)

October remains wet and unpredictable; heavy rainfall and overcast days are common, and the likelihood of tropical disturbances increases during the wider Central American hurricane season. Many lodges cut rates but also reduce services; national parks may close depending on trail washouts. Pack sturdy waterproof boots, a poncho, and be prepared for canceled or delayed domestic flights during stormy spells.

Nicoya Peninsula & Northern Central Pacific (Santa Teresa, Montezuma, Nicoya)

October remains stormy and sometimes grey, with heavy rainfall and occasional flooding in low-lying coastal villages; boat services to small bays may be limited. The peninsula is quiet tourism-wise, giving a very local feel, but expect fewer meal options in off-grid villages when roads are washed. For adventurous travelers it’s a dramatic time to see rivers and rapids swell, but avoid attempting long overland transfers after major rains.

Central Pacific (Manuel Antonio, Jaco, Puntarenas)

October maintains the strong wet-season pattern with frequent heavy storms and often-overcast days; many lodges reduce operations but rates can be attractively low if services align with your needs. Hiking becomes more demanding at this time of year, both from mud and from swollen river crossings. Pack insect repellent, quick-drying layers and confirm transport schedules ahead of long transfers.

Southern Pacific & Osa Peninsula (Uvita, Dominical, Corcovado)

October keeps heavy rainfall and stormy weather on a regular basis, and access to isolated ranger stations in the Osa can be directly affected by swollen rivers and fallen trees. Wildlife viewing from boats along estuaries can still be excellent on calm mornings, but avoid attempting long overland transfers after sustained rains. Expect slower travel, possible itinerary changes, and bring waterproof gear for both people and camera equipment.

Central Valley & Highlands (San José, Alajuela, Cartago, Poás, Arenal, Monteverde)

October remains rainy and at times stormy, which can make higher-elevation hikes sodden and crater visits uncertain, though geothermal hot springs around Arenal and La Fortuna are still very enjoyable. Roads up into cloud forests can be especially slippery - guided treks are recommended for safety. Carry rain protection, insect repellent and flexible bookings for outdoor activities.

Caribbean Coast (Puerto Viejo, Cahuita, Tortuguero)

October frequently remains one of the rainier months along the Caribbean coast with regular downpours that can impact small-boat travel and river crossings; Cahuita’s trails can be muddy though still navigable with good boots. This is a time for serious wildlife enthusiasts who don’t mind the wet: river wildlife and amphibian activity are high. Bring waterproof cases for cameras, high-traction footwear and flexible plans for transfers.
