Conchagua (volcano)

Conchagua is a stratovolcano on El Salvador’s eastern Pacific coast in La Unión Department, noted for its prominence above the Gulf of Fonseca and for providing extensive coastal panoramas. It is a prominent landscape feature of the region.

Hikers and visitors go to the volcano for short to moderate day hikes to ridge and summit viewpoints that look over the Gulf of Fonseca toward neighbouring Central American shores. The route and ridgeline vegetation vary from cultivated lower slopes to scrub and secondary forest higher up, and clear weather yields long coastal views.

Conchagua is a volcanic edifice with no well-documented historical eruptions in recent centuries; it has long been a landmark for local communities and was part of pre-Columbian and colonial-era geography of the Gulf area. Modern use focuses on recreation and local tourism rather than active volcanology.

The volcano rises near the town of Conchagua and the city of La Unión on El Salvador’s Gulf of Fonseca coast, in La Unión Department in the country’s southeast.
