Conch Republic Area

The Conch Republic is a symbolic, tongue-in-cheek micronation declared by the city of Key West, Florida, as a protest and tourism promotion device. It originated as a response to a 1982 federal road checkpoint that local officials said was harming tourism.

The declaration was led by local officials as a staged secession to draw attention to the economic impact of the checkpoint; it was immediately presented as a symbolic action and not a legal or political separation from the United States. Since then the Conch Republic identity has been used for festivals, passports, and local promotion.

The Conch Republic concept is centred on Key West and the Florida Keys; events and celebrations associated with the Conch Republic primarily take place in Key West and nearby islands along U.S. Route 1.

• To avoid the busiest tourist corridors, spend part of your visit exploring westward toward Fort Zachary Taylor State Park and quieter residential streets-you'll find less congested beaches and viewpoints away from Mallory Square.
