Comitium
Archaeological Site Ancient Roman assembly area within the Roman Forum
Part of ancient Rome’s political heart, the Comitium sits beside the Roman Forum; visitors come to see archaeological layers, early republican monuments and the forum’s public‑space remnants.
The Comitium is the original civic assembly area of ancient Rome, located at the northwest corner of the Roman Forum. It served as the city’s political, legal and public speaking space during the Republican era.
On site visitors can see archaeological remains including the base and fragments of the speakers’ platform known as the Rostra and portions of the paved assembly area. Interpretive signs and excavations reveal the layout of the space that once hosted assemblies, trials and public announcements.
The Comitium was developed in the early Republic and was modified repeatedly by Roman leaders; it remained central to public life until the Forum’s layout changed under the Empire. Important adjacent structures included the Curia and other Republican civic buildings.
The remains are situated at the northwest end of the Roman Forum in the centre of Rome, close to the Arch of Septimius Severus and the Via Sacra, and are accessible from the main Forum archaeological routes.
- Civic function: Functioned as the civic assembly and legal area of early Rome, forming the political heart of the city in the Republican period.
What to See #
- Rostra: The Rostra was the speakers' platform where magistrates and orators addressed the people; surviving fragments and restored sections mark its former location.
- Comitium remains: Excavated pavement, steps and foundation remains of the Comitium area expose the Republican-era civic space that adjoined the Forum and the Curia.
How to Get to Comitium #
The Comitium (the Roman-era civic space at the Roman Forum) is in central Rome adjacent to the Forum and Capitoline Hill. Take Rome Metro line B to the Colosseo station or walk from Termini station (Termini is one metro stop from Colosseo on line B).
From Colosseo station it is a short 5-10 minute walk to the Forum/Comitium area; many city buses also stop nearby along Via dei Fori Imperiali.
Tips for Visiting Comitium #
- Enter the Roman Forum/Comitium area early in the morning or book a Colosseum-Forum-Palatine timed ticket so you can see the Comitium before larger tour groups arrive.
- Start your visit by locating the semicircular steps of the Comitium and the nearby Lapis Niger - these small, low-lying archaeological features are easy to overlook amid the Forum's larger ruins but are central to the site's history.
- Combine the Comitium with a guided walk of the adjacent Curia and Forum layers; on-site signage is limited and a short guide or audio tour will reveal the political function and sequence of the Comitium better than self-guiding alone.
