Colophon (city) Archaeological Site

Colophon was an ancient Greek city in the region of Ionia on the western coast of Anatolia, in the area of what is now İzmir Province, Turkey. It was known in antiquity as one of the Ionian city-states.

In its historical period the city played a role in the cultural and political life of Ionia; it is cited in classical sources and associated with early Greek literature and artisanship. The city declined in influence in later Hellenistic and Roman times as other nearby centers grew.

Archaeological remains and historical references place Colophon in the inland coastal zone of ancient Ionia within modern İzmir Province. The site lies inland from the Aegean coast in western Turkey, within the broader landscape of the Aegean coastal plain and nearby hills.
