Coatepeque Caldera contains Lake Coatepeque, a deep volcanic lake ringed by cliffs and low hills. Locals and visitors swim, kayak and eat at lakeside restaurants while enjoying views of the water and surrounding coffee farms.
Coatepeque Caldera is a volcanic caldera in western El Salvador that contains the deep crater lake known as Lake Coatepeque. The caldera and lake form a prominent landscape feature in the region and are used for recreation and agriculture.
The caldera formed through volcanic activity in the region’s geological past; subsequent eruptions and geomorphological processes created the present lake-filled depression. The area around the caldera has long been used for agriculture and local settlement.
The caldera and lake are located in western El Salvador, in a volcanic region west of the central mountain chain and are visited from nearby towns and regional road networks.

How to Get to Coatepeque Caldera #
Coatepeque is roughly an hour’s drive from Santa Ana and under two hours from the capital, San Salvador, along the Pan-American corridor and local highways. Numerous minibuses and private shuttles serve the towns around the lake.
