City of Safranbolu

The City of Safranbolu is a Turkish town whose Old Town preserves a large ensemble of Ottoman-era civil architecture, notably well-maintained timber-framed houses and urban fabric from the 17th to 19th centuries. The site exemplifies Ottoman domestic and town planning traditions adapted to a small-town Anatolian setting.

Key elements include densely arranged merchant houses with projecting upper stories, caravanserais and public buildings such as baths and bazaars that reflect the town’s role on regional trade routes. Several historic houses and inns have been restored and now function as museums or accommodation showcasing traditional layouts and interior decoration.

Safranbolu developed as a regional commercial and administrative centre, and its preserved townscape demonstrates continuity of use and layered architectural interventions from the Ottoman period. Conservation efforts in the 20th century helped stabilize the ensemble and promote its historic character.
