CITIC Plaza is a commercial skyscraper in the Tianhe district of Guangzhou, Guangdong, China, completed in 1997 and rising to about 391 metres. It was one of the city’s landmark high-rises when finished and remains a prominent element of Guangzhou’s skyline.
The tower contains a mix of office space and a hotel and occupies a large footprint at street level, making it visually dominant in its immediate neighbourhood. Its height and central location make it a common reference point for navigation within Tianhe.
Construction finished in the late 1990s; the building was developed during Guangzhou’s rapid modern expansion and has served primarily as office and hotel space since opening. There have been routine modernisations to services and finishes, but the exterior profile has remained unchanged.
The skyscraper sits in the commercial heart of Guangzhou’s Tianhe district, close to major roads and transit links that serve the city centre and surrounding districts.
How to Get to CITIC Plaza #
CITIC Plaza is in Guangzhou’s Tianhe commercial district. The building is a short walk from Guangzhou Metro Tiyu Xilu station (Lines 1 and 3) - exit and walk a few minutes to the plaza. By car it’s in the Tianhe area off Tianhe Road / nearby the Guangzhou East Railway area; local taxis are a common way to reach the tower from elsewhere in the city.
Tips for Visiting CITIC Plaza #
- For photos of CITIC Plaza's illuminated façade, view the tower from the Zhujiang riverfront at dusk when the building lighting comes on-the plaza itself is primarily an office tower and is much more striking from surrounding public spaces after dark.
- If you're visiting the area, combine viewing the tower with nearby Guangzhou skyscraper viewpoints rather than expecting public observation decks inside the building, which is mainly commercial office space.
