Northeast China (Heilongjiang, Jilin, Liaoning)

October brings sharp light and cooler days; fall foliage peaks on higher slopes and lakes freeze earlier at night. Cultural sights in Harbin and smaller towns are pleasantly uncrowded compared with summer; however, temperatures fall quickly after sunset so insulating layers are needed. Some mountain passes begin to close as the first snows return to higher elevations.

North China Plain & Beijing (Beijing, Tianjin, Shaanxi fringe)

November’s cool, dry air brings foliage and crisp light; Xi’an’s terracotta warriors are especially photogenic with fewer tourists and comfortable daytime temperatures. Nights become quite chilly-bring a warm jacket-while smog episodes can occur during inversion conditions in the basin. It’s a good time for slower cultural travel and less chance of summer-style rain disrupting plans.

Inner Mongolia & the Grasslands

November is a brisk prelude to winter with short daylight, frequent frosts and scattered early snows in northern parts like Hulunbuir. Many roads become harder to navigate as mud freezes into ruts; remote stays are less reliable. This is a quiet, starkly beautiful time for photographers who can handle the cold-pack full cold‑weather gear and confirm transport before heading far from towns.

Northwest China & Xinjiang (Urumqi, Turpan, Kashgar)

November rapidly cools Urumqi and the desert fringes; snow returns to the mountains and some higher passes close for the season. Kashgar stays dry but chilly-daylight hours shorten and bazaars quiet down outside festival weekends. If you’re heading into the mountains, pack for subzero nights and confirm that guesthouses remain open on your route.

Tibetan Plateau (Tibet Autonomous Region, Lhasa, Everest approaches)

October’s crisp, dry air and sharp light make it another ideal month for Tibet-the plateau has stable weather, vivid scenery and cooling nights that reduce bug problems. Some higher passes begin to see early snow late in the month; travelers should be ready for rapid temperature drops after sunset. This is peak photographic season and a good period to visit monasteries and high passes with minimal rain.

Southwest China (Sichuan Basin, Yunnan, Guizhou)

November cools and dries the region: Yunnan’s lower elevations are very pleasant with blue skies and mild days, while the Sichuan Basin turns back to damp gray conditions. Some rural guesthouses begin to close in colder, less accessible valleys. This is a quieter travel window for cultural visits and low‑altitude hiking-pack mid‑weight clothing and a rain layer for Chengdu’s damp spells.

South China & Hainan (Guangdong, Guangxi, Hong Kong, Hainan)

October offers some of the best weather in the south: clear skies, lower humidity and comfortable temperatures make city walks, karst cruises around Guilin and beach days on Hainan most pleasant. Golden Week (first week of October) is extremely busy with domestic tourists, so book ahead around that holiday. A light jacket for evenings and sun protection for daytime outings are good choices.
