Northeast China (Heilongjiang, Jilin, Liaoning)
Spring warmth arrives in April with cherry blossoms and thawed waterfalls around Changbai Mountain; daytime temperatures become pleasantly cool while nights may still bite. Migratory birds return and the region’s forests green up quickly, making it a good month for countryside drives before the summer humidity. Expect a mix of sun and rain, so pack waterproof shoes and a light rain shell for parks around Dalian and coastal walks.
North China Plain & Beijing (Beijing, Tianjin, Shaanxi fringe)
Full spring bloom colors many Beijing parks in April, and daytime warmth makes walking between sites comfortable; evenings can still be cool. Tourist numbers rise as domestic visitors arrive for Qingming tomb‑sweeping and school outings, so expect lines at major sites. Occasional light rain and increasing pollen call for a light raincoat and antihistamines if you are sensitive.
Inner Mongolia & the Grasslands
By April, green shoots appear in sheltered valleys and border towns; daytime temperatures become pleasant while nights can still freeze. Horse festivals and early spring grazing scenes begin to return to life; this is a good time for photography without the summer insect load. Roads off the main routes improve but still need a high‑clearance vehicle-bring layered clothing and waterproof boots.
Northwest China & Xinjiang (Urumqi, Turpan, Kashgar)
By April, flowering apricot and peach trees color oasis towns and Kashgar’s Sunday market becomes busier with spring produce. Daytime warmth is pleasant, but nights can still chill-layers are necessary. High passes may still have residual snow, so trekking in the Tianshan still needs winter gear; roads are increasingly passable, making this a good shoulder month for long overland routes.
Tibetan Plateau (Tibet Autonomous Region, Lhasa, Everest approaches)
April produces clear, cold days ideal for acclimatization treks around Lhasa and Gyantse; highland meadows start to green in sheltered valleys. The shoulder season means fewer tourists than summer, and road travel improves, but snow can still appear unexpectedly at elevation. Strong UV exposure makes sunscreen and sunglasses indispensable even in cool weather, and bring a warm down jacket for evenings.
Southwest China (Sichuan Basin, Yunnan, Guizhou)
April sees warming temperatures across the southwest and the start of the rainy season in southern Yunnan and Guizhou; waterfalls like Huangguoshu gain volume and look spectacular. The Tiger Leaping Gorge trail is generally accessible but can be boggy in places. Bring waterproof footwear and expect more insects in lowland tropical areas; higher towns remain pleasantly cool.
South China & Hainan (Guangdong, Guangxi, Hong Kong, Hainan)
April becomes noticeably warmer and more humid, with short, sharp showers starting more frequently; Guilin’s karst peaks appear lush and river cruises on the Li River are comfortable. Hainan approaches true beach season with warm, sunny days though occasional early typhoon remnants can arrive. Bring lightweight, breathable clothing, insect repellent and a compact umbrella for sudden downpours.
