The Charminar is a late 16th-century monument and mosque at the historic centre of Hyderabad, built in 1591 by Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah. The structure features four grand arches and four minarets and marks the original city centre.
The monument includes an upper-level mosque and balconies that overlook the surrounding market streets. It is closely associated with the old city’s commercial quarter and remains one of Hyderabad’s most recognisable landmarks.
Constructed by the Qutb Shahi dynasty, the Charminar was built as a focal point for the newly founded city and has served religious, civic and commercial roles through the centuries. Preservation and restoration efforts have addressed weathering and urban pressures.

How to Get to Charminar #
Charminar is in Hyderabad’s Old City (Laad Bazaar / Makkah Masjid area) and is best reached by road. The nearest major railway station is Hyderabad Deccan (Nampally) - roughly 5-6 km away - and Secunderabad Junction is farther. From either railhead you can take a city bus, taxi or auto-rickshaw into the Old City; there is also a Charminar bus stop/stand within a short walking distance of the monument.
Tips for Visiting Charminar #
- Be among the first to arrive after opening to climb to the upper gallery for panoramic views of the four minarets and the surrounding Laad Bazaar before shops and crowds swell.
- Don't skip the terrace/inside access-ascending the charminar gives a unique perspective over the bazaar and lets you see the mosque façade up close, which many only admire from street level.
- Explore the adjacent Laad Bazaar and the nearby Mecca Masjid on foot; they contain crafts and historic details visitors often overlook when focused only on the monument.
