Exploring the Chan Thai Chhoeung Winery#
One of the few wineries in Cambodia, Chan Thai Chhoeung (formerly Amatak Prasat Phnom Banorn) sits in scenic countryside just south of Battambang, along the western bank of the Sangke River. It produces a range of local wines, most notably from shiraz grapes and from tropical fruits such as starfruit and dragon fruit, as well as a local brandy. Guided tours walk visitors through the vineyard and explain the winemaking process from vine to bottle, with tastings along the way.
Cambodia’s climate is not naturally suited to wine, and the current grape yields a drier red than the sweeter vintage once made here; the bottles are arguably more souvenir than cellar material. Even so, the vineyard is a pleasant place to break for lunch or a drink before or after visiting the temples south of Battambang town.
