About Chalcedon

Chalcedon is an ancient city on the Asian shore of the Bosphorus at the site of present-day Kadıköy in Istanbul. It was established by Greek colonists in the 7th century BC and became a significant settlement through classical and late antique periods.

Highlights in the area are the archaeological remains and the shoreline setting opposite ancient Byzantium, offering views across the strait to the historic peninsula. The location is notable for its continuity of settlement into the modern district of Kadıköy with layers of Greek, Roman and Byzantine heritage visible in place names and ruins.

Chalcedon was developed by Greek settlers from Megara and later came under Roman and Byzantine administration, serving as a regional centre and ecclesiastical seat. Its prominence peaked in late antiquity, notably hosting the Council of Chalcedon in 451 AD, which shaped Christian theology.

The site lies on the southern entrance to the Bosphorus on the Asian side of Istanbul, now absorbed into the urban fabric of Kadıköy and a short ferry or road crossing from the historic peninsula of Istanbul.

How to Get to Chalcedon

Chalcedon corresponds to the ancient settlement on the Asian shore of Istanbul around modern Kadıköy. From the European side take a seaside ferry (Şehir Hatları or private operators like TURYOL) to Kadıköy ferry terminal, or use Marmaray to Ayrılık Çeşmesi and transfer one short stop on the M4 metro to Kadıköy. From the Kadıköy ferry/metro area it is a short walk along the coast (around 10-15 minutes) to the neighborhoods associated with ancient Chalcedon.

Tips for Visiting Chalcedon

  • Plan Chalcedon as a morning visit - take a Bosphorus ferry to Kadıköy (Eminönü-Kadıköy or Karaköy-Kadıköy lines) to arrive before commuter and tourist peaks and get a clear view of the Asian-side coastline where the ancient city stood.
  • Approach on foot along the Kadıköy waterfront and Çarşı area rather than trying to find a single 'ruin' entrance; the remains are scattered and best appreciated alongside the harbour, local plaques and small pockets of archaeological signage.
  • Most visitors concentrate on European Istanbul; don't miss the local museums, neighbourhood streets and the seaside parks around Kadıköy/Fenerbahçe that preserve hints of Chalcedon's layout-ask at the Kadıköy tourist office for recent signage or small local exhibits.
