Cerro El Ávila is the mountainous ridge that overlooks Caracas, Venezuela, and forms a green barrier between the city and the Caribbean Sea. Its highest parts reach about 2,765 metres and it is the central feature of the nearby protected park often referred to as Waraira Repano.

The area is popular for hiking, birdwatching and scenic views over the capital; trails range from short walks to full-day ascents. A cable car, the Teleférico de Caracas, links the city to higher stations on the mountain, offering an alternative to hiking for reaching viewpoints.

The ridge and adjacent highland are protected for conservation and recreational use and contain humid montane and cloud-forest pockets as elevation increases. The mountain has long been used by residents of Caracas for outdoor recreation and as a major natural landmark.

Cerro El Ávila sits directly north of central Caracas, forming the city’s immediate northern skyline and descending to the coastal plain toward the Caribbean. Multiple trailheads and access points link the urban neighbourhoods to the park and ridge.

• Best time to visit: Early mornings and weekdays are usually the best times for quieter trails and clearer city-to-sea views.
• Access: The Teleférico provides the most direct public access to high viewpoints; verify operating hours before planning a visit.

What to See#

• Summit: The summit area at roughly 2,765 metres offers panoramic views over Caracas and the Caribbean coast and is a major viewpoint for the city.
• Cable car and stations: The Teleférico de Caracas cable car runs from the city up the slope, providing rapid access to higher elevations and viewpoints near the ridge.
• Trail network: An extensive network of marked hiking trails crosses the ridge and slopes, used for day hikes of varying difficulty and lengths.

From central Caracas, take the Avenida Libertador north toward El Silencio and Sabas Nieves; the Teleférico station is near the El Ávila park entrance. Multiple trailheads are accessible by taxi or short bus ride from neighborhoods such as El Hatillo, La Lagunita, and Los Caobos.

Because parking is limited on weekends, public transport or a taxi to trailheads is recommended; check INPARQUES notices for closures and cable car operations.

• Use the Teleférico de Caracas only when it's operating - its service is intermittent; if closed, the Sabas Nieves cable car station still serves as a good viewpoint.
• Early morning is best for avoiding clouds that roll in from the sea and obscure the city view.
• Hire an experienced local guide for forest trails; some routes are steep and poorly signed.
