Kazakh Steppe & Northern Plains (Kazakhstan)
Snow and ice continue to clear in May, and the landscape shifts quickly - grass returns to the pastures and rural markets in Pavlodar and Aktobe fill with spring produce. Daytime temperatures become pleasant (often 10-20°C), though nights can still be cool away from cities. For travelers this is one of the most agreeable times: comfortable touring conditions, fewer crowds than summer, and good road access once the thaw has finished.
Tien Shan, Pamirs & Altai Mountains (Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, eastern Kazakhstan)
Snow and ice continue to retreat in May, opening many valley routes: basecamps around Almaty, Karakol and the Ak‑Suu area become accessible and the first wildflowers appear. High passes are still risky until late May or June, but lower hikes, cultural visits and scenic drives are excellent; the risk of late snowstorms persists. Equip for rapid temperature swings, and expect higher local traffic as adventure tourism ramps up.
Fergana Valley & Southern Plains (Eastern Uzbekistan, southern Kyrgyzstan, northern Tajikistan)
Snowmelt and irrigation bring green abundance in May, with the valley warm and fragrant as fruit trees finish flowering and fields put out their summer crops. Daytime highs often reach the low to mid‑20s°C and humidity begins to climb in lower sections; rivers and canals support thriving agriculture. For travelers, May offers excellent conditions for cultural visits and rural drives - light layers and sun protection are recommended.
Central Asian Deserts & Turkmenistan (Karakum, Kyzylkum, Aral basin - Turkmenistan, parts of Uzbekistan & southern Kazakhstan)
Snow and much of the chill are gone by May and the desert moves toward hot, dry conditions: daytime highs climb into the mid to high 20s°C and irrigated gardens flourish around oasis towns. This is a popular time for archaeological sightseeing before the intense heat of summer; it’s still wise to avoid mid‑day exertion and to ensure you have water and shade. Hotels and guesthouses fill around regional festivals, so book ahead.
