The Catacombs of San Gennaro are an early Christian burial complex in Naples associated with the cult of Saint Januarius. The underground necropolis contains galleries, tomb chambers and wall paintings dating from the Roman and early medieval periods.

Visitors descend into vaulted galleries decorated with frescoes and burial inscriptions and can see different types of tombs, a baptistery and evidence of early Christian liturgical use. The site is both an archaeological complex and an early pilgrimage destination connected with local episcopal burials.

The catacombs lie in the Rione Sanità district of Naples, north of the historic centre, and are reached from street level by a stair and entry vestibule.

The Catacombs of San Gennaro are in Naples’ Rione Sanità district. From Napoli Centrale (Piazza Garibaldi) take Metro Line 1 toward Piscinola and get off at Materdei; from Materdei it’s roughly a 10-15 minute walk to the catacombs in Rione Sanità. Alternatively reach the area by local bus or taxi from Naples city centre; by car approach via Via Foria/Via Capodimonte (parking is limited, so a short taxi or walk from central parking is common).

• The Catacombs of San Gennaro are visited only with guided tours that run on a schedule from the Rione Sanità entrance-book ahead or arrive 20-30 minutes early to secure a spot on your preferred tour.
• Go early in the day when groups are smaller; guided tours can become crowded later, and early visits give you better chances for clearer views and photos where permitted.
