Castro, Lazio
Archaeological Site Abandoned medieval town ruins in Lazio region
Castro (Lazio) is the ruined hilltown in the province of Viterbo that served as the seat of the Duchy of Castro. The site has ancient origins and survives today as an evocative archaeological and historic ruin.
Visitors encounter the remains of fortified streets, fragments of defensive walls and building foundations set on a limestone ridge. The visible ruins reflect medieval and early modern urban fabric rather than a single monument.
The settlement has Etruscan and medieval roots and later became the seat of the Farnese family as Dukes of Castro. It was destroyed by Papal forces in 1649 during the Wars of Castro and was not rebuilt, leaving the exposed archaeological remains visible today.
The ruins lie in the province of Viterbo in northern Lazio, near the small towns of Ischia di Castro and on the upland plains above the valley of the Fiora river and Lake Bolsena.
- Destruction in 1649: The town was razed in the mid‑17th century during the Wars of Castro and thereafter remained a ruin, leaving conspicuous foundations and stretches of defensive walls.
