The Giardino dei Tarocchi (Tarot Garden) is a sculpture park in Tuscany created by artist Niki de Saint Phalle, composed of large, colorful, mosaic-covered figures inspired by the tarot’s Major Arcana. Work on the garden began in 1979 and continued into the late 1990s, with the artist and a team building monumental, walk-through sculptures.
The park’s principal attractions are its series of oversized sculptural installations that visitors can enter and move around; the works combine ceramics, mirror fragments, and painted surfaces and vary in height. Pathways connect the sculptures across the garden and the site is intentionally experiential, combining architecture, sculpture, and landscape.
Niki de Saint Phalle oversaw the design and execution of the garden over two decades, collaborating with craftsmen and other artists. The project was inspired by Antoni Gaudí’s Parc Güell and meant as a personal artistic environment that blends symbolic iconography with large-scale public art.
Situated inland from the Tyrrhenian coast near Capalbio in southern Tuscany, the garden occupies a hillside plot with views toward the Maremma landscape. The site is reached by local roads and is a short drive from coastal towns in southern Tuscany.

How to Get to Tarot Garden
The Tarot Garden (Giardino dei Tarocchi) is in southern Tuscany near the village of Garavicchio in the municipality of Capalbio. The site is best reached by car - it is rural and has on‑site parking; regional trains to nearby towns (for example Grosseto or Orbetello) are available but local bus connections can be infrequent, so driving from Grosseto, Capalbio or Rome is the most practical option.
Tips for Visiting Tarot Garden
- Plan to arrive at opening or in the late afternoon to avoid the hottest part of the day and see the sculptures' mosaic surfaces sparkle in softer light; the park's outdoor nature means light and weather greatly affect the experience.
- Take time to move inside and around the larger sculptures-many visitors focus on the exteriors, but the mosaic interiors, terraces and viewpoints are part of the artist's intent and often less crowded.
