Castello Ursino is a 13th-century stone castle in Catania, Sicily, constructed under Emperor Frederick II as part of southern Italy’s medieval fortifications.

The structure is notable for its massive square keep and thick defensive walls; it now contains a civic museum with archaeological collections and displays of local history. Visitors can view the exterior fortifications and explore the museum spaces that occupy the interior.

Built as a royal fortress in the mid 1200s, the castle later served multiple roles including defensive stronghold and civic building before being adapted as a municipal museum. It survived major earthquakes and urban change and today functions chiefly as a cultural and exhibition venue.

Located in central Catania, the castle sits close to the city’s main historic axis and is within walking distance of Catania Cathedral and Via Etnea, with Mount Etna visible from parts of the city on clear days.

Buses that stop near Piazza Duomo or Via Etnea include local AMT lines; taxis from the station take about 5-10 minutes depending on traffic.
