Adrano City
Historic town in Sicily with ancient ruins
Adrano sits below Etna with a Norman castle keep, narrow streets, and bakeries selling ricotta pastries; lava soils feed vineyards, and short drives open to craters and hiking routes.
Why Visit Adrano?#
Perched on the lower slopes of Mount Etna, Adrano attracts travelers curious about volcanic landscapes and small‑town Sicilian life. The Norman Castello di Adrano and lively market stalls give a historic, local flavor, while neighborhoods serve up arancini, cannoli and Etna wines at family‑run trattorie. Close enough to Etna trails for day hikes, the town makes a quieter base for exploring eastern Sicily’s vineyards and lava‑sculpted scenery.

How to Get to Adrano#
Adrano is most commonly reached via Catania-Fontanarossa (CTA); from there the local FCE railway and regional buses connect the town with Catania and other Etna communities. Driving gives the most flexibility for exploring Mt Etna and nearby towns.
Catania-Fontanarossa Airport (CTA): The closest commercial airport is Catania (CTA), about 35-45 km southeast of Adrano. From CTA you can rent a car (≈30-45 minutes) or take regional buses; taxis and transfers are also available for the drive into Adrano.
Comiso (CIY) / Palermo (PMO): Palermo and Comiso are alternative airports for arriving in Sicily but are significantly farther by road (Palermo ~2 hours+, Comiso ~1.5-2 hours). They are practical only if combined with a longer driving itinerary around the island.
Train: Adrano is served by the Ferrovia Circumetnea (FCE), a regional metre‑gauge railway that loops around Mount Etna; it connects Adrano to towns such as Paternò and Catania via the FCE network. Trains are frequent for local travel and useful for reaching Etna towns.
Bus: Regional bus services (AST/Interbus and local carriers) connect Catania Airport and Catania city with Adrano; journeys take around 30-50 minutes from Catania depending on route and traffic. Local buses serve short hops between Adrano and neighbouring villages.
How to Get Around Adrano#
For Adrano the FCE regional railway plus buses from Catania are the practical public‑transport options; renting a car gives the most flexibility for exploring Mount Etna and rural Sicily.
- Ferrovia Circumetnea (FCE) (€1-€5) - The FCE is the most characteristic local rail service: a narrow‑gauge line circling Mount Etna that stops in Adrano. It’s cheap, frequent for regional travel and the fastest public‑transport option to reach nearby Etna towns. Trains can be crowded at peak commuter times-buy tickets at the station.
- Regional bus (AST / Interbus) (€2-€8) - Regional buses link Adrano with Catania Airport, Catania central and neighbouring towns. Buses are economical and convenient if you don’t rent a car; schedules are less frequent on Sundays and public holidays, so check times in advance.
- Car / Rental car (Varies (rental rates) ) - Renting a car is the easiest way to explore Adrano and Mount Etna’s attractions on your own timetable. Roads around Etna can be narrow; a small car is often best. Parking in Adrano village centre is generally available but can be tight during festivals.
- Taxi / Private transfer (€30-€70 (approx.) ) - Taxis and private transfers are available from Catania Airport for direct door‑to‑door service; useful for late arrivals or if you have lots of luggage. Agree fares in advance for longer island transfers.
- Walking - Adrano’s historic centre is compact and pleasant to explore on foot; narrow streets and pedestrian areas are best seen by walking. Footpaths up to nearby viewpoints are short but can be steep.
