Carara National Park
National Park Biodiverse national park bridging dry and wet forests
Straddling Costa Rica’s transitional dry-wet forest zone near the Central Pacific, Carara National Park draws birdwatchers for scarlet macaws and toucans. Visitors hike trails, explore river edges, and join guided birding and amphibian-spotting walks.
Carara National Park is a protected area on Costa Rica’s central Pacific slope in Puntarenas Province, established to conserve lowland tropical forest and wildlife. It covers an area of about 5,242 hectares and is internationally noted for its birdlife.
Trails through humid forest and riverine habitat offer regular sightings of birds such as scarlet macaws, toucans, and a variety of migratory species; mammal and reptile sightings are also possible along waterways. Short trail loops and a visitor area make it accessible for day visits focused on birdwatching and nature photography.
The area was set aside and designated as a national park in the late 1970s to protect remaining lowland forest and critical habitat on the central Pacific coast. Conservation efforts have focused on preserving habitat for large birds and protecting the park from coastal development.
Carara National Park lies on Costa Rica’s central Pacific side in Puntarenas Province, near the Tarcoles River and close to the coastal communities and beaches of the Gulf of Nicoya region.
- Size and wildlife: The park protects roughly 5,242 hectares of lowland tropical forest and is an important site for birdwatching, including populations of scarlet macaw and other tropical species.
- Ecosystem importance: The park lies in a transitional zone between dry forest and humid rainforest, which supports high biodiversity and varied habitats along short routes and trails.
