Caprivi Strip
Area Narrow northeastern Namibian corridor bordering four countries
Narrow Namibian corridor in the country’s northeast (now Zambezi Region) framed by rivers; attracts game-viewing, river safaris and cross-border fishing near parks like Bwabwata.
The Caprivi Strip is a narrow, elongated region in north-eastern Namibia that projects eastward between Angola to the north and Botswana to the south; administratively it is now the Zambezi Region. It is a distinct geopolitical protrusion that follows river systems and contains significant wetlands and wildlife corridors.
The area contains several protected parks and conservancies such as Bwabwata, Mahango and Mudumu, and is important for transboundary wildlife movements and riverine ecosystems along the Zambezi, Kwando and Linyanti waterways. It is a notable safari and birdwatching destination within Namibia.
The strip was established under colonial-era agreements during the late 19th century and named after German chancellor Leo von Caprivi; its unusual shape reflects those historical negotiations. The regional centre is Katima Mulilo, and the strip forms Namibia’s corridor to the Zambezi River basin.
- Colonial origin: The narrow strip was created during colonial negotiations in the 19th century to provide access toward the Zambezi River and is named after a German chancellor, Leo von Caprivi.
What to See #
- Bwabwata National Park: Bwabwata National Park spans parts of the Caprivi/Zambezi corridor and protects a mixture of riverine and woodland habitats frequented by elephants and other large mammals.
- Mahango and Mudumu parks: Mahango and Mudumu are protected areas inside the strip known for riverine wildlife and seasonal floods that sustain diverse ecosystems along the Zambezi and Kwando rivers.
How to Get to Caprivi Strip #
The Caprivi Strip (Zambezi Region) is traversed by Namibia’s main east-west road through the region (the B8/Trans‑Caprivi route). The principal gateway town at the eastern end is Katima Mulilo; Rundu and Katima Mulilo are the main road access points within Namibia.
From Windhoek it is a very long overland drive (many hours/days) along Namibia’s national roads; most visitors fly domestically to Rundu or Katima Mulilo and continue by road within the strip. Local travel is by paved and unpaved roads; organized transfers and 4x4 vehicles are commonly used for game reserves and riverfront access.
Tips for Visiting Caprivi Strip #
- Use Katima Mulilo as your logistical base and plan safari activities in the dry season (roughly May-October) when wildlife congregates along rivers and roads are more passable - that's also when boat safaris and game drives are most productive.
- Avoid the busiest lodges along the main corridor by targeting community‑run concessions and smaller parks such as Mudumu and Nkasa Rupara; these areas are less crowded and offer better chances to see riverine wildlife away from the larger camps.
- If crossing borders or planning river activities, check documentation and seasonal river conditions in advance - the Zambezi/Chobe border area has multiple checkpoints and fluctuating water levels that affect itineraries.
