The Cappella Palatina is the royal chapel of the Norman Palace in Palermo, Sicily, commissioned by Roger II in the 12th century and renowned for its extensive Byzantine mosaics. It combines Byzantine mosaic art with an Arabic-style wooden ceiling and Norman architectural elements.

The interior is covered with vivid mosaic cycles depicting biblical scenes and saints, and the wooden muqarnas-style ceiling shows the influence of Islamic craftsmen working in the Norman court. The chapel also contains a raised royal tribune and finely detailed liturgical furnishings.

Constructed in the 12th century as part of the Norman royal complex, the chapel served as the palace chapel and a symbol of the multicultural court of Roger II. It has been preserved and restored over the centuries and is a central element of Palermo’s medieval heritage.

Located inside the Palazzo dei Normanni in central Palermo, the chapel is reached from the palace courtyard and sits within the historic core of the city.

The Cappella Palatina is inside the Palazzo dei Normanni (Royal Palace) in central Palermo. From Palermo Centrale railway station you can take a short taxi or local bus ride to the palace, or walk (roughly 20-30 minutes depending on route) through the historic centre along Via Maqueda/Via Vittorio Emanuele. The palace is well signed and in the historic core of the city.

• Buy timed-entry tickets and go as early as possible-the Cappella Palatina fills quickly and early visits give you better lighting to appreciate the mosaics.
• Enter via the main gates of the Palazzo dei Normanni (Palace of the Normans) on Piazza Indipendenza and allow time to visit the upper gallery where many of the finest mosaics and the wooden muqarnas ceiling are located.
• Check guided-tour times or audio-guide availability in advance: the chapel's mosaic program and Arabic-influenced ceiling are frequently overlooked by visitors who only view the ground-level chapel.
