Canopus, near Alexandria and Lake Mariout, was an ancient coastal city tied to Greco‑Roman cults. Archaeological remains and coastal marshland attract historians and visitors combining Alexandria’s museums with local excavations.

Canopus was an ancient Egyptian coastal city in the Nile Delta, located near the eastern approaches to the modern city of Alexandria in what is now Alexandria Governorate. It was a major port and religious centre in late Pharaonic and Hellenistic times.

The town was associated with cults of Osiris and later Serapis and gave its name to the Canopic branch of the Nile. Over centuries shoreline change, sedimentation and seismic activity altered or submerged parts of the site.

The remains of Canopus lie close to Abu Qir Bay east of Alexandria, and archaeological work in the area has revealed temple structures, statuary and harbor works.

Archaeology: many of the city's remains lie near or under the waters of Abu Qir Bay, and artifacts from Canopus are held in museums in Alexandria and Cairo.

The ancient site of Canopus lies on the eastern outskirts of Alexandria near Abu Qir Bay. From Alexandria take the Alexandria-Abu Qir suburban rail line (trains depart from Alexandria’s main stations) to Abu Qir station, then a short taxi ride to the coastal archaeological area. By car drive east from central Alexandria along the coastal road toward Abu Qir (roughly a few dozen kilometres); parking and a short walk from the roadside accesses the visible remains.

Treat Canopus as an archaeological excursion rather than a standalone sightseeing highlight - many of the best finds from Canopus are displayed in Alexandria's museums, so combine a site visit with a museum stop.
Go in the cooler morning hours to avoid Alexandria-area heat; the ancient site near Abu Qir/Canopic mouth has limited visible ruins and is best appreciated with a knowledgeable guide who can point out submerged or fragmentary remains.
Include Canopus as part of a wider Alexandria/Abu Qir itinerary rather than expecting a large, fully conserved ruin complex on its own.
