The canals of Amsterdam form the concentric 17th-century canal ring (Grachtengordel) around the historic centre of Amsterdam in North Holland and are a defining feature of the city’s urban layout. The network of canals, lined by narrow merchant houses and crossed by numerous bridges, has a UNESCO World Heritage designation for its 17th-century urban planning and architecture.

The canal network in the city totals over 100 kilometres of waterways, with roughly 165 individual canals and about 1,500 bridges across Amsterdam’s broader system. Canal-side cafés, houseboats and the facades of well-preserved canal houses are focal points for sightseeing and photography.

Activities include short sightseeing cruises, private boat hires, walking along the quays and visiting waterside neighbourhoods such as Jordaan and the Nine Streets. The canals are busiest in the warmer months but remain active and scenic year-round, with special events and festivals often using the waterways.

The canal system was laid out during Amsterdam’s major expansion in the 17th century to organise urban growth, support trade and control water; the principal ring canals remain in use and well preserved today. They sit in the centre of Amsterdam and are within easy walking distance of the main railway station and central squares.
