Bloemenmarkt is Amsterdam’s historic floating flower market located on the Singel canal in the city centre, established in the 19th century.

The market consists of a string of stalls mounted on moored houseboats and quay platforms selling cut flowers, potted plants, tulip bulbs and gardening souvenirs; it is compact and concentrated along the canal frontage.

Stalls operate year-round but the widest range of bulbs and seasonal flowers appears in spring, when tulip displays are strongest.

The market sits between Koningsplein and Muntplein in central Amsterdam, a short walk from major central landmarks.

• Visit just after opening (around 9am) to catch the freshest bulbs and avoid the late-morning tour groups near Muntplein.
• Enter from the Muntplein end for the classic view of stalls framed by the Munttoren; the vendors closest to Koningsplein sometimes hold better bargains later in the day.
• Bring a small suitcase or waxed paper for tulip bulbs - import restrictions mean bulbs bought here may need inspection on return flights.
• If buying cut flowers ask vendors for a 'snijbloemen' wrap to protect stems while walking - the canal breezes dry them fast.
