Buto is the name of an ancient city in the Nile Delta, located in what is now Kafr El Sheikh Governorate in northern Egypt. The site has origins in the Predynastic period and became an important centre in Lower Egypt.
The archaeological remains include tells and ruins that mark long-term occupation; the city was a cult centre associated with the Egyptian cobra goddess and played a role in early state formation. Over later periods its prominence shifted as other Delta centres grew.
The ancient site lies within the western Nile Delta coastal plain and is identified with a tell commonly called Tell el-Fara’in near modern villages in Kafr El Sheikh Governorate.
