Amazon & The North (Manaus, Belém, Alter do Chão)

August continues dry and warm with lower river levels exposing sandbars and enabling overland access to some remote parks around Santarém and Alter do Chão. Clearer air improves visibility for sighting rivers and birds, and canoe routes into igapó forests become narrower but navigable. Travelers should pack sunscreen and insect repellent for warm days and a light jacket for occasionally cool nights on the river.

Northeast Coast (Salvador, Recife, Fortaleza, Jericoacoara)

August sees steady conditions along Ceará’s coast - warm, windy and mostly dry - while the humid belt around Salvador and southern Pernambuco can still catch stray showers. Whale-watching season is active further south from August onward on some Bahia coasts (though not all areas), so check local providers. Travelers who prefer windsurfing or kitesurfing will find reliable conditions on Jericoacoara and Cumbuco beaches.

Northeast Interior - The Sertão & Chapadas (Petrolina, Juazeiro, Chapada Diamantina)

August remains sunny and dry across most of the interior, the kind of weather that favors long-distance treks across the Chapada and guided jeep routes into the sertão. Dust can be more noticeable on unpaved roads, and water sources in remote areas are limited-carry additional supplies. This month is good for photography of stark landscapes and star-filled nights; bring headlamps and protective layers for cold mornings.

Central-West (Brasília, Pantanal, Cuiabá, Bonito)

August remains dry and sunny - an ideal month for combining Pantanal safaris with Chapada dos Veadeiros and Brasília sightseeing. Wildlife viewing remains strong as animals gather at shrinking water sources, and dust on roads increases so pack suitable footwear and a dust mask if sensitive. Evenings are cool at altitude and daytime heat can still be strong in lowland Cuiabá, so layered clothing works best.

Southeast (Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Ouro Preto, Paraty)

August stays mild and increasingly pleasant for outdoor activities; São Paulo’s winter haze sometimes clears giving crisp air for city photography, and Rio warms slowly during the month. Cultural festivals persist in inland towns and the shoulder season means lower hotel rates compared with the summer. Bring a medium-weight jacket for early mornings and plan outdoor excursions for midday when it is warmest.

The South (Florianópolis, Curitiba, Gramado, Foz do Iguaçu)

August stays brisk with cool mornings but slowly lengthening days; occasional winter storms can bring heavy rain rather than snow at lower elevations, affecting river levels and trails. Wine routes and farm stays are welcoming as shoulder-season tourism returns, and accommodations may be easier to find than in summer. Pack layered clothing and sturdy footwear for damp trails in forested reserves.
