Amazon & The North (Manaus, Belém, Alter do Chão)
The basin remains very wet through April, and iconic attractions like the flooded várzea forests are at peak inundation - nearby islands and river beaches around Alter do Chão begin to shrink. Birding and wildlife viewing from boats is superb because animals concentrate on remaining island habitat, yet heavy rains make road travel to remote lodges unpredictable. Urban areas cope with standing water, so waterproof footwear and flexible transfer plans are essential.
Northeast Coast (Salvador, Recife, Fortaleza, Jericoacoara)
April often brings the wettest weather to parts of the southern Pernambuco-Bahia coast; Salvador and points south can be humid with extended showers that cool the afternoons but muddy dirt roads inland. Recife still receives frequent rain, which can impact island boat rides and coastal ferry links; northern beaches around Natal and Fortaleza typically remain sunnier. If you plan cultural walking tours in Salvador or Recife, choose covered footwear and accept that some remote beaches become harder to reach.
Northeast Interior - The Sertão & Chapadas (Petrolina, Juazeiro, Chapada Diamantina)
April is often the wettest and most dramatic month for the highlands: chapadas light up with streams and waterfall-fed pools, making Lençóis and Mucugê particularly attractive for canyoning and swimming. The surrounding lowlands may start to get isolated pulses of rain but generally stay drier than the plateaus. Travelers to Chapada Diamantina should bring waterproof layers and expect muddy paths but superb water features.
Central-West (Brasília, Pantanal, Cuiabá, Bonito)
April sees the first real decrease in rain for much of the Central-West; river levels begin to fall in the Pantanal, re-exposing trails and making overland wildlife safaris more feasible. Bonito’s snorkeling sites regain clearer conditions as runoff diminishes, and Brasília settles into milder afternoons with very pleasant evenings. This transition is excellent for mixed itineraries combining dramatic wet-season boat safaris with drier highland walks.
Southeast (Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Ouro Preto, Paraty)
April often offers a welcome easing of humidity along the coast and clearer skies for hillside hikes around Rio and the Serra do Mar near São Paulo. Museums and colonial towns in Minas have comfortable daytime temperatures and festival crowds thin out, making cultural exploration easier. Rainfall decreases but remains possible, so pack layers for cool evenings in higher-elevation towns like Campos do Jordão and Ouro Preto.
The South (Florianópolis, Curitiba, Gramado, Foz do Iguaçu)
April often presents a drier, fresher spell: coastal crowds peter out and autumn colours begin in higher elevations like the Serra Gaúcha. Foz do Iguaçu maintains impressive waterfall flow but with fewer tourists than in summer; evenings turn cooler and a light jacket becomes useful. This is a good month for combining nature visits with city touring-expect comfortable days and crisp, cooler nights.
