Boudha Stupa (Boudhanath) is one of the largest and most important Buddhist stupas in Nepal, located in the Boudha area of Kathmandu. It is a major pilgrimage and prayer site for Tibetan Buddhists and local communities.

The stupa has a large white dome topped by a square tower painted with all-seeing eyes of the Buddha and is surrounded by a circumambulatory path lined with prayer wheels and monasteries. Pilgrims perform clockwise kora (circumambulation) around the structure while spinning prayer wheels and reciting mantras.

The site has existed for many centuries and has been an active religious centre for Tibetan and Nepali Buddhists; it forms part of the cultural ensemble of the Kathmandu Valley. The stupa and surrounding monasteries have been repaired and restored following earthquake damage in 2015.

Boudha stands in the northeastern suburbs of Kathmandu, within the Kathmandu Valley, about 6 kilometres northeast of the city centre (Kathmandu Durbar Square). The area around the stupa is a dense neighbourhood of monasteries, shops and pilgrim lodgings.

  • Devotional route: Circumambulation around the stupa on the paved kora path is the main devotional practice and provides close views of the painted Buddha eyes and prayer wheels around the base.

How to Get to Boudha Stupa #

Boudha (Boudhanath) Stupa is in the Boudha neighbourhood on the northeastern side of Kathmandu. The stupa is typically reached by taxi or local microbus from Thamel/Durbar Marg (city centre); the drive is on the order of several kilometres (roughly 6-7 km depending on start point) and drops you at the main square, with only a short walk (a few minutes) to the stupa’s circumambulation path.

Tips for Visiting Boudha Stupa #

  • Visit at dawn or around golden hour when monks and locals perform kora (circumambulation) and the stupa is quieter for unobstructed views; rooftop cafes fill later in the day but offer the best photographic vantage points.
  • Head up to one of the surrounding rooftop terraces for a bird's-eye view of the full stupa framed by prayer flags-these terraces are the simplest way to capture the entire monument without ground-level crowds.
  • Respect the clockwise circumambulation route and observe the rhythmic flow of devotees early in the morning to see traditional practices that many daytime-only visitors miss.
