Okavango Delta & Panhandle (Northwest)

August remains cool and dry, with sunny days that warm quickly; the Delta often shows its fullest waterways, making mokoro trips and boat safaris spectacular. Wildlife is abundant and predictable along water corridors, but early bookings are essential and some picnic sites may close briefly when hippos move in. A windproof layer for morning cruises and binoculars are a must-mosquito numbers are low compared with the wet season.

Chobe Riverfront, Linyanti & Savuti (Far North)

August keeps the clear, dry weather that makes river and floodplain safaris so appealing: long, sunny days, cold dawns and superb photographic light. Elephant numbers along the Chobe River are at their seasonal peak and boating is calm and reliable. This is high season: lodges fill early, game drives can start at dawn, and you should reserve transfers and river cruises well in advance.

Makgadikgadi Pans & Nxai Pan (Salt Pans and Surrounding Plains)

August stays dry and increasingly hot by day while mornings remain cool; the salt pans have their classic cracked-surface look and wildlife viewing is excellent around dwindling waterholes. Flamingos are unlikely now unless a rare inundation has occurred, but the stark landscape rewards photographers and those wanting solitude. Bring water, sun protection and a wide-brimmed hat for long daytime excursions across the open flats.

Central Kalahari (CKGR and Surrounds)

August starts warming in the daytime but retains cool mornings; the Kalahari’s sparse vegetation and wide horizons make for excellent wildlife tracking and photography. This is a favoured month for guided walks and night drives where offered, but always check local rules-walking nocturnally is restricted in some concessions. Pack layered clothing for temperature swings and a strong sunhat for midday exposures.

Southern Kalahari & Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park (Southwest)

August begins warming by day but retains chilly mornings; the Kgalagadi is still in its dry spell and sightings of big cats tracking hooved mammals are common near permanent water. Winds can pick up, creating fine sand that affects camera equipment-bring protective covers and lens cloths. Plan for changing winds and pack layered clothing.

Southeast Lowveld & Urban Areas (Gaborone, Francistown, Palapye and Surrounds)

August begins to warm while remaining dry, and daytime heat increases; this month is good for road trips and accessing reserves without the wet-season complications. Palapye’s surrounding hills are pleasant for hikes and the long dry spell means roads are in good condition. Pack sun protection, and consider booking popular tourist services in advance as this shoulder season grows busier.
