Bali Botanic Garden (Kebun Raya Bali) is a highland botanical garden located in the Bedugul area of central-northern Bali, established to cultivate and study tropical and montane plant species. The garden functions as both a public display and a centre for plant conservation and research.
Visitors follow shaded paths through themed collections, including orchids, medicinal plants and a variety of native and introduced tropical species, with greenhouse and display areas. The garden’s elevation provides a cooler climate that supports species uncommon in Bali’s coastal zones.
The garden was developed in the 20th century as part of Indonesia’s network of botanical gardens and has since hosted research, conservation and public education programmes focusing on Bali’s flora. Plant collections and facilities have expanded to support conservation and tourism.
The garden sits in the Bedugul highlands of central-northern Bali, inland from Denpasar and near the town of Bedugul; it is commonly visited as a day trip from southern Bali and is set among volcanic lakes and remnant forested slopes.
- Climate advantage: Situated in Bali's upland Bedugul region, the garden's cooler climate supports montane plant collections not found on the island's lowlands.
What to See #
- Orchid and cycads collections: Collections of orchids, cycads and other tropical plants cultivated for conservation and display in themed sections.
- Research and demonstration gardens: Shaded walking paths and demonstration gardens set at higher elevation in the Bedugul area, with a herbarium and research facilities on site.
