Northern Posavina & Bosnian Plain (Sava valley)

Warm, sometimes humid days arrive by mid-April and countryside trails can be pleasantly green; daytime highs often reach the high teens. Showery spells still happen, though thunderstorms are uncommon until later in the season; the flood risk rises if extended rain combines with snowmelt from higher ground. It’s a good month for cycling along river levees, but waterproof panniers and quick-dry clothing are useful.

Central Bosnia & Sarajevo (Inner Highlands)

High summer in Sarajevo brings warm, dry days perfect for strolling the Old Town and sipping coffee in open-air cafés. Heat is moderated compared with lowland Herzegovina - afternoons are typically in the low to mid-20s - but sudden summer storms do roll over the surrounding ridges and can flood narrow streets briefly. Pack light clothing plus a compact waterproof, and book museum tickets ahead during festival season.

Dinaric Mountains & National Parks (Jahorina, Bjelašnica, Vlašić, Sutjeska)

By May lower valleys are lush and accessible while the highest ridges may still have patches of snow; wildflower season is at its peak and many mountain lodges reopen for summer visitors. Streams are full and waterfalls like Skakavac near Sarajevo flow powerfully - a great time for photographers. Temperatures are comfortable for hiking, but pack layers for high winds and possible late-season showers.

Herzegovina & Neretva Valley (Mostar, Blagaj, Konjic)

High summer is hot and dry: Mostar often experiences very warm afternoons with temperatures commonly into the high 20s and regularly into the low 30s during heatwaves. The Neretva’s shaded gorges and swimming holes become prized escapes; boat trips and canyoning are popular, though midday sightseeing in the sun can be oppressive. Book river activities early, drink plenty of water and schedule walking for early morning or late evening.

Adriatic Coast & Neum (Coastline and Pelješac microclimate)

High summer is the peak season on Neum and nearby Pelješac, with long, hot, dry days and busy beaches and marinas. Sea temperatures reach their warmest, making swimming, sailing and kayaking very pleasant; expect crowds on the narrow coastal strip and longer waits at border crossings into Croatia. Sunscreen, hats and early reservations for accommodation are essential.
