High / low are average daily temperatures (°C). “Feels” reflects how hot or cold it feels, allowing for humidity.
Northern Posavina & Bosnian Plain (Sava valley)
Peak summer brings hot, often sultry conditions; the Sava valley can feel stifling during midday with temperatures regularly in the mid to high 20s and sometimes higher on heatwave days. Afternoon or evening thunderstorms are the most common relief - powerful but brief, they can interrupt long drives and outdoor plans. If visiting riverside cafes or camping, expect mosquitoes and pack insect repellent.
Central Bosnia & Sarajevo (Inner Highlands)
By late October the hills take on autumn colors and misty mornings are common; daytime temperatures are cool and often breezy. Rain increases through the month and some higher trails can be muddy; cultural life moves indoors but the city remains lively. This is a good time for photography and quieter museum visits, though waterproof layers and a warm hat are advised for early starts.
Dinaric Mountains & National Parks (Jahorina, Bjelašnica, Vlašić, Sutjeska)
September is a crisp, clear month in the Dinarics with cooling nights and fewer visitors - peak autumn colours arrive on beech and spruce slopes. The reduced thunderstorm risk and still-warm days make it excellent for longer multi-day treks and wildlife watching. Lodges begin to close for winter, however, so confirm resupply points when planning remote routes.
Herzegovina & Neretva Valley (Mostar, Blagaj, Konjic)
By late October the valley cools quickly and autumn rain increases, though prolonged downpours are less common than in spring. River levels can rise briefly, and fog can form in low-lying areas in the mornings. It’s a quieter travel time ideal for photography and sampling seasonal produce, but expect shorter daylight and pack a waterproof layer for sudden showers.
Adriatic Coast & Neum (Coastline and Pelješac microclimate)
By late October the coast cools and rain becomes more frequent as Mediterranean cyclones start to pass through; ferry timetables reduce again and beach facilities begin closing. Stormy days can be dramatic and are better appreciated from cafés than on open boats. Pack a waterproof jacket and expect unpredictable sea conditions if planning boat trips.
