Bolshoi Theatre

The Bolshoi Theatre is Moscow’s historic opera and ballet house located on Theatre Square and renowned worldwide for its ballet company and classical repertoire. The company and building are central to Russia’s performing arts tradition.

Audiences attend full-scale opera and ballet productions in the main auditorium and can visit the grand foyers and staircases on guided tours. The Bolshoi also operates a modern secondary venue that stages contemporary works and smaller productions.

The Bolshoi company dates to the 18th century and the present historic building dates from the mid-19th century; it has been altered and restored several times since then. A major renovation in the early 21st century updated stage technology and restored historic interiors.

Situated on Theatre Square in central Moscow, the theatre is adjacent to other cultural institutions and is within walking distance of central city landmarks and transport links.
