Boboli Gardens
Museum Historic Renaissance gardens behind Pitti Palace, Florence
Behind Florence’s Pitti Palace, the Boboli Gardens feature Renaissance landscaping, statues, grottos and tiered terraces with views across the city-visited for sculpture, formal plantings and promenades.
The Boboli Gardens are a historic formal park behind the Pitti Palace in Florence, Tuscany, created in the 16th century as a grand ducal garden for the Medici. It is one of the earliest and most important examples of Italian garden design.
Large axial vistas, sculptural groups from the 16th to 19th centuries, fountains and grottos are principal attractions. Highlights include the sunken amphitheatre, the ornamental Isolotto pond, the Grotta del Buontalenti and long tree-lined promenades such as the Viottolone. The setting offers framed views over the city and the surrounding hills of Florence.
The garden was begun in the 16th century for the Medici family and developed over decades with contributions from several designers and sculptors. Over time the grounds were extended and embellished by later owners and have been preserved as a historic public garden since the 19th century.
The site sits directly behind the Pitti Palace in the Oltrarno district of Florence, within walking distance of the Ponte Vecchio and Florence city centre. The terrain is hilly, rising from the palace toward the Boboli’s upper terraces and viewpoints.
- Best time to visit: Best light is in the morning and late afternoon when terraces and statues cast strong shadows, and spring and autumn offer milder temperatures and floral displays.
- Combine with Pitti Palace: Access is directly from the rear of the **Pitti Palace**; combine a visit with the palace and the Boboli's adjoining Bardini Garden for extended views over Florence.
What to See #
- Layout and major sections: A large formal park laid out on a hillside behind the **Pitti Palace**, containing major sculptural ensembles, formal promenades and planted bosquets. Key subareas include a central amphitheatre, the grotta and ornamental lake known as the Isolotto, and long axial vistas that connect terraces and fountains.
- Grotta del Buontalenti and Isolotto: The Grotta del Buontalenti is a late 16th-century grotto noted for its Mannerist decoration. The Isolotto contains a central fountain and sculptural group and sits in a pond reached via a formal axis.
- Amphitheatre and terraces: The Amphitheatre occupies a terraced, semicircular setting directly behind the palace and served as the focal outdoor space for entertainment in the garden scheme.
- Viottolone (main promenade): The Viottolone is a broad, tree-lined avenue that forms one of the principal promenades and sightlines through the park.
