How to Get to Birendranagar
Birendranagar (Surkhet) is served directly by Surkhet Airport (SKH) just outside town, with Kathmandu's Tribhuvan International Airport (KTM) acting as the main international connection. Domestic flights are the quickest way to reach Birendranagar; long-distance buses and shared jeeps provide lower-cost overland options.
Surkhet Airport (SKH): Surkhet Airport is the closest airport to Birendranagar, a short drive from the town centre. Taxis and shared jeeps run from the terminal to central Birendranagar; a taxi typically costs around NPR 150-300 and takes 5-15 minutes depending on traffic.
Tribhuvan International Airport (KTM): Kathmandu’s Tribhuvan International is the main international gateway for travellers coming to Birendranagar. The fastest option is a domestic flight KTM→Surkhet (about 35-45 minutes); typical one-way fares range widely by season and carrier (roughly NPR 6,000-12,000). Alternatively, long-distance buses run from Kathmandu to Birendranagar (see bus card) and take roughly 12-16 hours; fares are usually in the NPR 700-1,500 range.
Train: Nepal does not currently have an intercity passenger rail service to Birendranagar, so trains are not a practical option for reaching the city.
Bus: The main bus hub is Birendranagar (Surkhet) Bus Park. Direct and overnight buses connect Birendranagar with Kathmandu (Gongabu Bus Park) in roughly 12-16 hours; fares are typically NPR 700-1,500 depending on service class. Buses and shared services to Nepalgunj take about 4-6 hours with fares commonly around NPR 300-700. Local minibuses and tempos run frequent short routes inside Surkhet and to nearby towns; expect fares from about NPR 15-100.
How to Get Around Birendranagar
Birendranagar is a compact regional centre best navigated on foot in the central area and by short taxi or tempo rides for nearby trips. For intercity travel, domestic flights to Surkhet are the quickest option; buses, shared jeeps and minibuses are cheaper but slower and less predictable.
- Taxis (NPR 100-400) - Metered taxis and private cars are the most convenient way to get around Birendranagar for door-to-door trips. Fares are modest for short rides but meters are not always used-always agree the fare before you get in or ask the driver to use the meter. Taxis are best for early-morning or late-night travel when buses are limited.
- Local buses & microbuses (NPR 15-100) - Local buses and microbuses cover the city and nearby villages and are the cheapest option for most journeys. They can be crowded and run on flexible timetables; carry small change and be prepared for frequent stops. Useful for short trips across town and for short inter-town hops.
- Shared jeeps / Intercity vans (NPR 150-700) - Shared jeeps and vans are common for routes to surrounding districts and are often faster than regular buses on hilly roads. They depart from the main bus park once reasonably full and are a practical choice for reaching rural valleys where buses do not go. Expect bumpy rides and variable departure times-book or arrive early for busy routes.
- Motorbike rental (NPR 800-1,500/day) - Renting a motorbike is a flexible way to explore the Surkhet valley and nearby rural roads at your own pace. Roads outside town can be rough and signage sparse, so only rent if you are comfortable with local driving conditions; always wear a helmet. Rentals typically require a passport deposit or ID copy.
- Tempos / Auto-rickshaws (NPR 20-100) - Three-wheelers (tempos) serve short routes in town and are useful for trips where a full taxi would be overkill. They are cheap and easy to flag down but fares are usually negotiated rather than metered-confirm price before riding. Not ideal for luggage-heavy transfers or long distances.
- Walking - Birendranagar's central area is compact and walkable-markets, guesthouses and many restaurants are within easy walking distance. Walking is the best way to explore the town centre, but avoid unlit rural paths at night and be prepared for uneven sidewalks.
