Bilhorod-Dnistrovskyi fortress

Bilhorod-Dnistrovskyi fortress, often known historically as Akkerman Fortress, is a large medieval stronghold on the Dniester estuary in Odesa Oblast, Ukraine. It is one of the region’s principal surviving fortifications and a prominent historical landmark.

The site offers extensive remaining curtain walls, towers and an inner citadel that visitors can inspect on foot, with lengthy ramparts and stairways providing views over the estuary. Interpretation and pathways allow exploration of multiple defensive structures and ruins that illustrate the fortress’s layered history.

The fortress developed in the medieval period and passed through the control of regional powers including Genoese merchants, Moldavian rulers and the Ottoman Empire; it was expanded and adapted under successive administrations. Its fortifications reflect a sequence of military and administrative uses from the Middle Ages through the early modern period.

The fortress sits beside the city of Bilhorod-Dnistrovskyi on the Dniester estuary, in southwestern Odesa Oblast near Ukraine’s Black Sea coast.
