How to Get to Bilene
Bilene is a small coastal resort town best reached by road from larger Mozambican airports, especially Maputo (MPM) or Inhambane (INH). There is no direct rail link; most visitors arrive by air into a regional airport then continue by bus or private transfer.
Maputo International Airport (MPM): Maputo is the largest airport serving southern Mozambique. From Maputo you can take an interprovincial bus or rent a car to reach Bilene; buses depart Maputo bus stations to Maxixe/Mapinhane and connections toward Bilene typically take 3.5-5 hours by road. Private transfers or taxis from Maputo to Bilene will be faster (about 3.5-4.5 hours) but significantly more expensive than bus services.
Inhambane Airport (INH): Inhambane is closer to Bilene than Maputo and is served by a few domestic flights. From Inhambane you need to take a bus or private transfer north along the EN1 and local roads; road travel time is roughly 2.5-4 hours depending on connections and ferry crossings. Services are less frequent than from Maputo, so plan connections in advance.
Train: There is no direct long-distance passenger rail service to Bilene; Mozambique’s main passenger rail lines do not serve the town. The nearest practical rail hubs are in Maputo (for long-distance freight and limited passenger services) from which you switch to road transport.
Bus: Intercity minibuses (chapas) and long-distance coach services operate from Maputo and Inhambane toward coastal towns near Bilene. Expect road travel times of 2.5-5 hours depending on origin and service type; buses or shared vans are the standard low-cost option, private transfers shorten travel time but cost more.
