How to Get to Bilene#

Bilene is a small coastal resort town best reached by road from larger Mozambican airports, especially Maputo (MPM) or Inhambane (INH). There is no direct rail link; most visitors arrive by air into a regional airport then continue by bus or private transfer.

By Air

Maputo International Airport (MPM): Maputo is the largest airport serving southern Mozambique. From Maputo you can take an interprovincial bus or rent a car to reach Bilene; buses depart Maputo bus stations to Maxixe/Mapinhane and connections toward Bilene typically take 3.5-5 hours by road. Private transfers or taxis from Maputo to Bilene will be faster (about 3.5-4.5 hours) but significantly more expensive than bus services.

Inhambane Airport (INH): Inhambane is closer to Bilene than Maputo and is served by a few domestic flights. From Inhambane you need to take a bus or private transfer north along the EN1 and local roads; road travel time is roughly 2.5-4 hours depending on connections and ferry crossings. Services are less frequent than from Maputo, so plan connections in advance.

By Train & Bus

Train: There is no direct long-distance passenger rail service to Bilene; Mozambique’s main passenger rail lines do not serve the town. The nearest practical rail hubs are in Maputo (for long-distance freight and limited passenger services) from which you switch to road transport.

Bus: Intercity minibuses (chapas) and long-distance coach services operate from Maputo and Inhambane toward coastal towns near Bilene. Expect road travel times of 2.5-5 hours depending on origin and service type; buses or shared vans are the standard low-cost option, private transfers shorten travel time but cost more.

How to Get Around Bilene#

Bilene has limited public-transport infrastructure; the practical way in is flying to a regional airport (Maputo or Inhambane) then continuing by bus or private transfer. Once there, walking and short local rides (mototaxis) are the easiest ways to get around.

  • Intercity bus/chapas - The most common way to reach Bilene from Maputo, Inhambane or nearby towns is by intercity coach or shared minibus (chapa). Services are inexpensive, run on flexible schedules, and follow the EN1/EN4 corridors; journeys can be long and roads are variable, so bring water and expect delays. Book a private transfer if you need a fixed arrival time.
  • Private transfer/taxi - Private transfers or hired cars are the fastest and most comfortable option, especially if you travel with luggage or in a group. Travel times from Maputo are around 3.5-4.5 hours depending on traffic and road conditions; drivers can drop you directly at your guesthouse. Negotiate or confirm a fixed fare in advance with reputable companies.
  • Car hire - Hiring a car gives the most flexibility to explore the lagoon and surrounding beaches. Roads vary from paved to rough; a 4x4 is useful in the wet season. Fuel and rental costs are higher than public transport, and petrol stations can be sparse outside major towns.
  • Local tuk-tuks/taxis - Within Bilene, local mototaxis or tuk-tuks are common for short hops between the beach, shops and the lagoon. Fares are short and negotiable; always agree the price before starting. They are handy for last-mile transfers from bus drop-offs.
  • Walking - Bilene is compact and very walkable along the lagoonfront and main beach area. Walking is the best way to explore the town centre, markets and beachfront restaurants; bring sun protection and insect repellent.
