How to Get to Bethany#
Al‑Eizariya (Bethany) east of Jerusalem is reached via Ben Gurion Airport with a rail or shuttle to Jerusalem, then a short local taxi or bus into the West Bank. Expect to transfer in Jerusalem; public shared taxis (sherut/minibuses) are the most convenient local option.
Ben Gurion Airport (TLV): Israel’s main international airport. From the airport take Israel Railways to Jerusalem-Yitzhak Navon (about 25 minutes; tickets roughly 16-23 ILS), then change to a local taxi/shared taxi (service taxi/sherut) or bus toward al‑Eizariya/Betania (Bethany) - the final leg from central Jerusalem to al‑Eizariya typically takes 15-30 minutes and costs roughly 15-40 ILS depending on taxi or shared service.
(No other major airports close to the West Bank): If arriving at other Israeli entry points or via Jordan, onward travel will usually involve bus, shared taxi or private transfer into the West Bank and local checkpoints; options and times vary by crossing.
Train: Israel Railways runs high-speed services to Jerusalem-Yitzhak Navon and to Tel Aviv. There is no direct passenger rail to al‑Eizariya; use Jerusalem stations (Navon, Malha) as hubs and continue by bus or taxi.
Bus: Palestinian minibuses (service taxis) and Israeli/Palestinian bus lines operate routes between Jerusalem and al‑Eizariya (Bethany). From Jerusalem central bus stops or East Jerusalem (near Damascus Gate) the ride is short (15-30 minutes); fares are modest-typically under 20 ILS for shared taxis or local buses.
How to Get Around Bethany#
Getting to Bethany means using Jerusalem as a hub: fly into Ben Gurion, reach Jerusalem by rail or bus, then take local shared taxis/minibuses into the West Bank. For convenience choose shared taxis for short hops; use buses when on a tight budget.
- Airport rail to Jerusalem (16-23 ILS) - Ben Gurion’s rail link to Jerusalem-Yitzhak Navon is fast and regular (≈25 minutes). From Navon change to local buses or taxis for West Bank destinations; buy tickets at machines or online.
- Shared taxi (sherut) / Palestinian minibuses (10-40 ILS) - Shared taxis and minibuses are the most practical way between Jerusalem and al‑Eizariya. They depart from eastern Jerusalem and various collection points; fares are low and journeys are short, but services follow demand rather than strict timetables.
- Local bus (6-20 ILS) - Local Israeli or Palestinian bus services link Jerusalem with East Jerusalem suburbs and nearby West Bank towns. Buses are cheap but can be slower than shared taxis and are subject to route/stop limitations and checkpoint procedures.
- Taxi / Private transfer (50-150 ILS) - A private taxi avoids transfers and checkpoint uncertainty; it’s the fastest door‑to‑door option when timing matters. Negotiate a price in advance or use a reputable company.
- Walking - Within al‑Eizariya the town centre is compact and walkable; walking is the best way to explore local sites and markets.
