Belize Barrier Reef Reserve System

The Belize Barrier Reef Reserve System is a marine and coastal protected area off the coast of Belize that comprises barrier reef, atolls, mangroves and sea-grass beds. It is the largest reef system in the Northern Hemisphere and an internationally significant marine ecosystem.

The reef system developed through coral growth over millennia and has supported coastal communities for centuries. Modern conservation efforts have established protected areas to manage fisheries, tourism and habitat protection.

The reserve system runs along Belize’s Caribbean coast, offshore from mainland Belize and its cayes, extending for several hundred kilometres and encompassing multiple atolls and marine reserves.

• Scale and components: The Reserve System runs roughly along the coast of Belize for about 300 kilometres and includes barrier reef, atolls, cayes, seagrass beds and mangroves crucial for coral, fish and sea turtle habitats.
• Great Blue Hole access: The Great Blue Hole at Lighthouse Reef is a well-known scuba diving destination reached by boat from Belize City and coastal towns such as San Pedro and Caye Caulker.

• Turneffe Atoll: Turneffe Atoll is the largest atoll in the system and contains extensive coral reefs, lagoons and mangrove islands that support diverse marine habitats.
• Glover's Reef: Glover's Reef is a large atoll and marine reserve composed of narrow cayes, reef crest and deep lagoon channels important for reef research and conservation.
• Lighthouse Reef / Great Blue Hole: Lighthouse Reef contains the Great Blue Hole, a near-circular marine sinkhole that is a widely known dive site adjacent to the reef atoll.
