Why Visit Baubau? #
A gateway to the lesser-visited islands of Southeast Sulawesi, Baubau draws travelers interested in maritime culture and coral reefs. The 16th-century Keraton Buton fortress and palace give a vivid window into the old Buton sultanate, while nearby Labengki and Tukang Besi isles reward divers and snorkelers with clear reefs. How to Get to Baubau
Baubau on Buton Island is served by Betoambari Airport (BUW), which handles domestic flights to larger Indonesian hubs. If BUW has no convenient connections, travelers often route via Makassar and continue by combination of bus and ferry.
Betoambari Airport (BUW): The small Betoambari Airport is in Baubau city and is the main way most visitors arrive by air. Taxis from the airport to the city centre cost about 30,000-70,000 IDR and take roughly 10-20 minutes depending on traffic.
Makassar (Sultan Hasanuddin) - alternative: If you cannot find a direct flight to BUW you can fly to Sultan Hasanuddin International Airport (UPG) in Makassar and continue by overnight ferry or a combination of bus and ferry to Buton Island; that overland+sea trip can take 10+ hours and is best planned in advance.
Train: There are no intercity passenger trains serving Baubau or Buton Island - Sulawesi has very limited rail infrastructure. Omit rail when planning travel within southeast Sulawesi.
Bus / Ferry: Baubau is connected to the Sulawesi mainland and other island ports by public buses and regular ferries. Buses and shared minibuses run to nearby towns and ferry terminals; ferry crossings to Kendari and other ports typically take several hours (prices vary widely by operator). For short trips inside Baubau use local angkot, minibuses and motorcycle taxis.
How to Get Around Baubau #
Baubau’s centre is compact and reasonably walkable, especially around the waterfront and Keraton area. Local transport includes angkot/shared minibuses, ojeks (motorbike taxis) and regular taxis for short hops. For intercity travel you’ll use ferries or boats via Betoambari Port and regional buses to larger Sulawesi towns. Expect short taxi/ojek rides to cost in the low tens of thousands of rupiah; carry cash and confirm prices beforehand.

Live-music or bar scenes are limited and generally informal. If you’re looking for late-night options, ask locals for the busier eateries on the harbor; large clubs and tourist-oriented nightlife are not common.
