Batam Island
Island Indonesian industrial and ferry hub near Singapore
A short ferry hop from Singapore, Batam in the Riau Islands mixes industry, resorts and duty‑free shopping; visitors come for day trips, seafood, diving and golf resorts.
Batam Island is one of the largest and most developed islands of Indonesia’s Riau Islands province, located in the Singapore Strait close to Singapore and the southern Malay Peninsula. It is an important industrial, transport and tourism centre.
The island combines industrial zones and shipyards with tourist facilities such as resorts, shopping districts and seafood restaurants; common visitor activities include shopping in Nagoya, visiting coastal resorts, and day trips to nearby islands. Regular ferry services link Batam with Singapore and Johor, making it a frequent short-stay destination for regional tourists and business travellers.
Batam developed rapidly from the late 20th century after government policies promoted industrial zones, free-trade areas and transport links to Singapore and Malaysia. Investment in ports, roads and bridges has transformed the island into a transport and manufacturing hub.
Situated in the Riau Islands province of Indonesia, Batam lies in the Singapore Strait just south of Singapore and north of the Riau archipelago; principal urban centres include Batam Centre, Nagoya and Sekupang.
- Frequent international ferries: Ferry crossings to Singapore and to Johor Bahru are frequent; crossing times vary by service but commonly range from about 30 minutes to 90 minutes depending on route and vessel.
- Industrial and transport hub: Batam is a major industrial and logistics hub in the Riau Islands, with shipyards, manufacturing zones and tourist resorts concentrated around several coastal towns.
What to See #
- Barelang bridge complex: A chain of bridges and causeways linking Batam with the neighbouring islands of Rempang and Galang, built to improve transport and regional development.
- Batam Centre ferry terminals: The Batam Centre area contains the main ferry terminals that serve international routes to Singapore and Malaysia, and is the island's administrative and transport hub.
- Nagoya commercial district: Nagoya (also known as Nagoya Hill) is the island's main commercial and shopping district with markets, malls and hotels serving tourists and business travellers.
How to Get to Batam Island #
Ferries depart multiple times daily from Singapore’s HarbourFront Centre to Batam Centre, Sekupang and Nongsa (operators include Batam Fast, Sindo Ferry). From Batam ferry terminals take local taxis or ride-hail services to resorts, Barelang Bridge (about 1-1.5 hours from Batam Centre), or industrial areas.
Tips for Visiting Batam Island #
- Take the 50-70 minute fast ferries from Singapore's HarbourFront (operators include Batam Fast and Sindo Ferry) and head straight from Batam Center to the island hinterland - taxi fares can escalate after midnight.
- Skip the souvenir malls at Nagoya and instead head to the Barelang Bridge chain for sunrise photography; the bridge complex is best seen early when fishermen are still working.
- Book resorts in Nongsa or waterfront hotels near Sekupang for quieter beaches; the Nagoya area is lively but built for shopping and nightlife, not scenic walks.
Best Time to Visit Batam Island #
Batam is year-round accessible, but the dry season (Apr-Sep) gives the most reliable conditions for ferries and outdoor excursions.
