Basilica Aemilia
Archaeological Site Ancient Roman basilica ruins in the Roman Forum
In Rome’s Forum, the Basilica Aemilia survives as classical ruins and carved fragments; visitors come for archaeology, Roman civic architecture and proximity to other Forum monuments.
Basilica Aemilia was an ancient Roman civil basilica located on the north side of the Roman Forum in Rome, Italy, originally established in the 2nd century BC. It served as a public building for business and legal matters in the Republican and Imperial periods.
Architecturally the basilica consisted of a long central nave with side aisles, rows of columns, and an open internal court typical of Roman basilicas. Significant rebuilding and decorative additions were made over time in the late Republic and early Imperial eras.
The basilica was founded by members of the Aemilius family in the 2nd century BC and was rebuilt after fires and damage during the Republic and early Empire. Its remains survived as archaeological ruins that have been excavated within the Roman Forum.
The site sits on the north side of the Roman Forum near other major ancient monuments in central Rome, readily visited as part of the Forum archaeological area.
- On-site access: Ruins are visible within the Roman Forum area, so visits are typically combined with other Forum and Palatine Hill sites.
