The Bardo National Museum in Tunis is Tunisia’s principal museum of archaeology and decorative arts, known for an extensive collection of Roman mosaics and material from the country’s Phoenician, Punic, Byzantine and Islamic periods. It occupies a 19th-century palatial complex in the Le Bardo suburb west of central Tunis and is a major national cultural institution.
Galleries are organized by period and display hundreds of mosaic panels, statuary, inscriptions, ceramics and small finds from archaeological sites across Tunisia. The Roman mosaic rooms are the museum’s best-known attraction and include scenes from myth and daily life rendered in polychrome stone tesserae.
The museum was established in the 19th century when a former beylical palace complex was converted to house state antiquities, and the collections expanded through excavations across Tunisia during the late Ottoman and French protectorate periods. The building and displays have been modified and renovated several times since the museum’s founding.
Located in the Le Bardo district immediately west of central Tunis, the museum is a short drive from the city centre and is accessible by road and public transport.
